How to Calculate Age Difference

Calculating the age difference between two people is straightforward: subtract the older person's date of birth from the younger person's, using the same borrowing method used in chronological age calculations. The formula works in three steps:

  1. Subtract the days. If the result is negative, borrow 30 days from the month column (add 30 to the day result and subtract 1 from the months).
  2. Subtract the months. If the result is negative, borrow 12 months from the year column (add 12 to the month result and subtract 1 from the years).
  3. Subtract the years to get the final age gap.

Example

Person 1 was born on March 15, 1990. Person 2 was born on August 22, 1985.

YearMonthDay
Person 1 (younger)1990315
Person 2 (older)1985822
Borrow (days < 0)1990245
Borrow (months < 0)19891445

Age difference: 4 years, 6 months, 23 days.

Age Gap Statistics

Age differences in relationships have been studied extensively by demographers and sociologists. Here are some key statistics:

  • The average age gap between married couples in the United States is approximately 2.3 years, with the husband being older in about 64% of cases.
  • About 8.5% of married couples in the US have an age gap of 10 years or more.
  • In Western Europe, the average gap is slightly smaller, hovering around 2.0 years.
  • Globally, the age gap tends to be larger in regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where gaps of 5–7 years are common.
  • The age gap between partners has been shrinking over the last century. In the early 1900s, the average gap in the US was closer to 4 years.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the distribution of age gaps among married couples looks like this:

Age GapPercentage of Couples
0–1 years33.9%
2–3 years30.0%
4–5 years14.6%
6–9 years13.0%
10–14 years5.7%

Age Difference in Relationships

What counts as a "normal" age gap depends largely on cultural context and personal preference. In most Western societies, an age gap of 1–3 years is considered typical and rarely raises eyebrows. Gaps of 4–7 years are common and generally accepted, while gaps exceeding 10 years may draw more attention.

The "Half Your Age Plus 7" Rule

One of the most popular rules of thumb for socially acceptable age gaps is the "half your age plus 7" formula. To use it, divide the older person's age by 2 and add 7 — the result is the minimum acceptable age for their partner.

Your AgeMinimum Partner AgeMaximum Age Gap
20173 years
2519.55.5 years
30228 years
402713 years
503218 years
603723 years

While this rule has no scientific basis, it first appeared in print in 1901 and has remained a widely referenced cultural guideline. If you want to find out how old someone is based on their birth year, that can help you quickly check the math.

Celebrity Age Gaps

Celebrity couples often put age differences in the spotlight. Here are some well-known examples:

CoupleAge GapWho Is Older
Beyonce & Jay-Z12 yearsJay-Z
George & Amal Clooney17 yearsGeorge
Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds11 yearsRyan
Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas10 yearsPriyanka
Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart22 yearsHarrison
Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor32 yearsHolland
Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones25 yearsMichael
Emmanuel & Brigitte Macron24 yearsBrigitte

These examples show that significant age gaps are common among public figures and can accompany successful, long-lasting partnerships. The key factors in any relationship — communication, respect, and shared goals — matter far more than the number of years between partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate the age difference between two people, subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one. Start with the days — if the result is negative, borrow 30 days from the months. Then subtract months — if negative, borrow 12 from the years. Finally subtract the years. The result is the exact age gap in years, months, and days. Our chronological age calculator uses the same borrowing method for single-person age calculations.

In the United States, the average age gap between married couples is about 2.3 years, with the husband typically being older. Globally, the average ranges from 2 to 5 years depending on the country and culture. Roughly 64% of heterosexual couples have an age gap of 0–3 years. However, there is no universally "normal" gap — what matters most is the quality of the relationship.

The "half your age plus 7" rule is a social guideline suggesting the youngest person you should date is half your own age plus 7 years. For example, a 30-year-old should not date anyone younger than 22 (30 ÷ 2 + 7 = 22). While not a scientific rule, it has been referenced since at least 1901 and remains a popular rule of thumb for socially acceptable age gaps in relationships.

Research shows mixed results. Some studies suggest that couples with larger age gaps (10+ years) may face higher divorce rates, while others find that relationship satisfaction depends more on shared values, communication, and mutual respect than on age. A study from Emory University found that a 5-year gap increased the likelihood of divorce by 18%, and a 10-year gap by 39%. However, many couples with significant age differences have long, happy relationships.
